How the directory works

Useful island pages, not a dump of doorway pages

Scotland has many very small inhabited islands. Publishing a repeated service matrix for every islet would not help visitors, so the directory follows official island regions and gives separate pages only to viable commercial markets.

Sami remains based in Preston. Island work is delivered remotely, with calls, demonstrations and handover planned around connectivity, availability and the people who will operate the finished system.

Every island represented

Coverage through Scotland's island regions

The groupings below give smaller island communities a useful route into the site without creating pages that are almost identical for places with very small populations.

Argyll and the Inner Hebrides

The dedicated Islay, Mull and Bute markets sit within wider coverage that includes Tiree, Jura, Coll, Colonsay, Gigha, Lismore, Iona, Seil, Luing and neighbouring smaller isles.

Arran, Bute and the Cumbraes

Arran, Bute and Great Cumbrae have their own service clusters, with Little Cumbrae and the smaller connected communities represented through this regional route.

Skye and the Highland Islands

The Skye cluster also provides the route for Raasay and the Small Isles, including Eigg, Muck, Rùm and Canna, without pretending each small community needs a duplicated page set.

Lewis, Harris and connected isles

Lewis and Harris has a complete service cluster and represents connected island communities such as Great Bernera and Scalpay through an honest model for working remotely.

Orkney and Shetland

The Orkney and Shetland clusters cover their mainland and communities on the outer islands, including Westray, Sanday, Hoy, Yell, Unst, Whalsay, Bressay, Fetlar, Fair Isle and smaller isles.

Uist, Barra and Vatersay

Separate clusters for Uist, Barra and Vatersay support the southern Outer Hebrides, including Benbecula, Berneray, Eriskay and the connected island communities.

Complete named coverage

All islands in the official geography of nine regions

This directory names every currently or previously inhabited island coded by NRS and included by the Scottish Government's 2023 regional geography. The names define coverage; they do not imply a separate office or a duplicated landing page for each small island.
